Detailed Description

This day will be of interest to all professionals working with deaf babies and preschool children.

Auditory Verbal UK (AVUK) together with the Scottish Sensory Centre will be hosting an introductory day course on Auditory Verbal Therapy. This course will focus on the use of Auditory Verbal strategies to maximise listening and spoken language with preschool deaf children and their parents. Course attendees will learn how to use a range of AV strategies to support deaf children and their families including:

a.     Evaluating functional listening
b.     Scaffolding auditory understanding
c.     Supporting the development of the first spoken words and phrases
d.     Using a parent-coaching model for intervention

There will also be a Q&A session during which a therapist from AVUK will be available to answer questions from participants about AV therapy. During this time, participants can bring along case examples or video clips of deaf children whose families want to develop listening and spoken language but the journey there may be challenging.  

Auditory Verbal UK is a national charity and is part of the Health and Social Care Alliance Scotland (the ALLIANCE). AVUK provides training for professionals working with deaf children and their families and provides therapy directly to families across Scotland.
