Grace Jones’ extraordinary career spans several decades, during which (amongst other activities) she has produced a number of critically-lauded albums, starred in mainstream films, worked with artists including Keith Haring and Andy Warhol, and written a memoir. Fierce and uncompromising, she has maintained a bold visual identity throughout her career – most notably in her collaborations with the designer Jean-Paul Goude. This international conference will examine different facets of Jones’ life and work, including songs, music videos, record sleeve design, specific live performances, and her film One Man Show. Keynote talks will be given by Sophie Fiennes and Uri McMillan. There will also be screenings and nightclubbing. The symposium is the second in an ongoing international series of events devoted to exploring the topic of ‘the iconic’.
